HAIR CARE

Q: Do I have to wash my hair every day?
A: You should adjust the frequency of your washings depending on your lifestyle and the amount of oils your scalp secretes. It is important to use a professional formula shampoo to keep your hair healthy.

Q: Is it important to change shampoo brands regularly so that my hair doesn’t become immune to one specific kind?
A: Frequent use of one type or brand of shampoo is not always the reason people need to change shampoo brands. Weather changes often cause the need to change shampoos. In dry winter air, a moisturizing shampoo may become necessary. In the summer, you may need a volume-building shampoo which will help keep your hair fuller.

Q: What are the benefits of natural ingredients, such as botanicals, eggs, honey, aloe vera, oils, etc., in shampoo?
A: Natural source botanicals add proteins and conditioning agents to shampoo. They may be derived from plant and vegetable extracts or other sources. The benefit to hair is that they contain proteins and moisture in a natural state and could be an alternative for people with sensitive scalps or allergies. There are many professional brand shampoos that contain natural ingredients.

Q: When I rinse my hair after shampooing, what temperature should the water be?
A: If your hair is dry, you may want to use warm water. Hot water stimulates oil production and may help with your hair’s dryness. If your hair tends to get oily, cool or lukewarm water is recommended. A cool water rinse helps close the cuticle, which makes the hair feel smoother and cuts off oil production. The temperature you select should be determined by the results that you would like to achieve.

Q: Is there a difference between using a conditioner and using a cream rinse?
A: A conditioner penetrates the hair; a cream rinse detangles and doesn’t penetrate. A conditioner imparts moisture or protein to strengthen hair. Cream rinse works instantly but must be rinsed out well or it leaves a residue, making hair look dull.

Q: Why do some conditioners make my hair feel greasy?
A: The weight of the conditioner and its capacity to rinse out without any residue, rather than the amount used, contribute to the hair feeling greasy. If your hair feels very greasy, try using a lightweight conditioner, like a leave-in one.

Q: Does chlorine affect the condition of my hair?
A: Chlorine causes oxidation and oxidation by-products which cause dryness and lightening of the hair. To prevent this, use an anti-chlorine product after exposure to chlorine.

Q: What is the difference between mousse, liquid, lotion, spritz, spray gel, glaze and gel?
A: Mousse is a light hold, fast drying foam to use on wet or dry hair. It adds lift, fullness, and protection against heat and dryness. Styling liquids, lotions, and creams are medium-hold products worked through wet hair with the hands. They add volume, shape, or style and control curls. Applying it to the base of the hair helps hair stand up from the roots and appear fuller. Spritz and spray gels are usually used on dry or damp hair to sculpt or control it and add body and texture. Spritzes tend to be stiffer than spray gels. Spray gels can achieve the wet look. Glazes and gels are thick liquids used on wet or dry hair. Use for sculpting wet looks, for accenting particular curls, or controlling thick, wavy hair.

NAIL CARE

Q: Why does my nail polish peel or chip off the same day or the day after application?

A: Important steps to ensure polish stays on and lasts:
  • Prepare nail surface - use polish remover to remove any oil or lotion, wash hands and dry hands.
  • Apply base coat. At this point nails should be thoroughly dry.
  • Apply 2 coats of color polish. Apply the polish lightly and quickly using sweeping strokes. Start from the base to the free edge in the order shown in the illustration:
  • Let polish dry between coats.
  • Apply top coat to protect the polish; re-apply it every two days to keep the shine.

  • Polish should be thin enough to flow freely. Apply the first coat of color polish thinly - any streaks will even out with the second coat.
  • Tip: For the Ultimate in protection try Ultimate Sheild Base and Top Coat by SALLY HANSEN
Q: I have weak nails. How can I make them grow stronger?
A: Making nails grow and making nails stronger are two different things. Making nails grow is achieved with the increase of blood circulation or stimulation. Using products with moisturizers (conditioners) or proteins can help make nails stronger.

Q: Do nail growth products work?
A: Nail growth begins at the matrix of the nail deep inside the finger. Products applied to the surface of the nail will not affect nail growth. Massaging cuticle oil or cream into the base of the nail every day will help to stimulate circulation and promote nail growth.

Q: How should I file my nails?
A: The best way to file the nail is from one edge of the nail to the center, and then from the other edge back to the center. You should NEVER saw at your nail. Use long and smooth strokes.

Q: How can I make the ridges on my nails smoother?
A: Try buffing your nails with short, gentle strokes. Buff only in one direction.

Q: When I get a manicure, I worry that the implements the technician uses are not clean and are used on multiple clients. Is there a health risk?
A: A solution to this fear is to bring your own personal manicure tools to the salon. However, nail salons are required by law to sterilize all implements to prevent cross contamination.

SKIN CARE

Q: How can I make my skin look fresher and more glowing?
A: Always start with a good night of sleep and a gentle cleansing routine that removes make up and dry skin, yet keeps in moisture. Apply moisturizer, then apply foundation in a light motion with a damp sponge or fingertips. Apply translucent powder around eyes and over difficult blemishes.

Q: What are moisturizers? Do all skin types need moisturizers?
A: The main ingredients in most moisturizers are water and emollients (animal, vegetable, or petroleum-based oils) which act as barriers to moisture loss. Oil-free moisturizers work by drawing water into the outermost layer of the skin. Facial moisturizers designed for day use are usually of a lighter consistency than facial night creams or eye creams. Moisturizers are also formulated by skin type. Although people with oily skin may not need a facial moisturizer, because there are many contributors to moisture loss - age, heat, cold, wind, sun, as well as indoor heating and cooling - most people benefit from using a moisturizer.

Q: Do I need to use a special eye cream? What are the benefits?
A: The skin around the eyes is the thinnest on your body. Eye creams are generally moisturizers that are specially formulated for this very sensitive area. They are intended to moisturize and soften the skin as well as improve the appearance of wrinkles.

DRY SKIN

Q: How do I treat dry hands that continue to get rough and red, despite the fact that I use hand lotion?
A: In the winter, your hands are drier than at any other time of the year and tend to become more rough and red. To stimulate blood circulation throughout the hands and arms and promote the absorption of the conditioners into the skin use a massaging action when applying hand lotion. Be sure to apply hand creams frequently, more than once a day if your hands are very dry. Always apply creams after washing your hands or submerging them in water.

Q: I have dry skin. Should I use a rinseable or a cream-based cleanser and how often?
A: Dry skin can be cleaned two times a day with a non-soap cleansing bar, a rinseable lotion formulated for dry skin, or a cleansing cream. Rinse thoroughly to hydrate your skin and remove all traces of cleanser. Apply a moisturizer immediately.

Q: My skin is dry. Do I need to use a moisturizer under my foundation?
A: Yes. All skin types should use moisturizer for their skin type under foundation. Moisturizers keep skin soft and smooth and also help foundation to blend easier and adhere to the skin.

NORMAL SKIN Q: What is the best way to clean normal skin?
A: Wash your face in the morning and before bed with either a soap-based or a non-soap cleanser. Avoid extremes, such as products that are either drying or oily. Rinse thoroughly, pat dry, and apply a light moisturizer.

OILY SKIN
Q: I have oily skin. How can I best cleanse it?
A: Cleanse two to three times daily using a bar or lotion cleanser formulated for oily skin. Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of product and towel dry. After cleansing, wipe a pad with toner across oily areas of the face.

ACNE
Q: What causes acne?
A: There are a number of factors that can contribute to breakouts: heredity; hormone level fluctuation caused by puberty; pregnancy or menstruation; improper cleansing and use of incorrect skin care products; stress; irritation caused by constant chafing; etc. There is no proof that acne is caused by food products, but food allergies can cause rashes on the face.

Q: Can I wear makeup over acne products without aggravating my skin?
A: Yes, but choose makeup products that are oil-free or non-clogging. Make sure to read the labels carefully.

MAKEUP TIPS

Q: How do I choose my base?
A: Try a little on the inner forearm.

Q: How do I apply my makeup after using sunscreen?
A: After applying sunscreen, wait a few minutes before applying foundation in order to avoid "slipping" or "streaking" on the skin. Layer an oil-free or low-oil foundation over sunscreen. Use a heavy-duty concealer with a small make-up brush (lip brush size) to cover dark spots of pigmentation. If desired, lightly dust powder over the whole ace or over the spot area.

Q: Is allover foundation always necessary?
A: No, if you have fresh looking, fairly even skin all you may need are one or two touches of base (keep it the same tone or slightly lighter than your skin tone) applied under the eyes and anywhere else the skin may be a slightly different color.

Q: What do I apply first, concealer or foundation?
A: The concealer should be applied before your foundation. Apply a concealer that closely matches your skin tone by dotting it on the troubled spots, then apply foundation. Blend well.

Q: What should I use to apply my foundation? How should it be applied?
A: Use a firm wedge-shaped sponge. Begin by applying a small amount of foundation to the center area of your face, then blend outward toward the hairline. Blend so that the foundation disappears at the hairline and under your chin. When possible, apply foundation in natural light rather than artificial light.

Q: Why does my base always look too heavy?
A: It could be one of a few things. First, to get a base to look natural, you skin must be in good condition (cleansed, moisturized, and nourished). Are you sure you have chosen the color nearest to your natural skin tone? This is very important for a natural look. Blend it with a damp sponge. This may help. Make sure that you are using it with the right powder, preferably slightly lighter than the base.

Q: Do pressed powder and loose powder produce different effects?
A: Yes. Loose powder “sets” makeup and minimizes shine, but does not add coverage. Loose powder should be applied sparingly with a large professional powder brush. Pressed powder is denser than loose powder. It provides light coverage and may be used to refresh makeup or even in place of foundation for quick applications. Use a clean puff or sponge to apply pressed powder.

Q: I like to darken my skin. How can I do this in a natural way?
A: Blend your base in very well (preferably with a damp sponge) especially on the neck. If you use powder, use a light or transparent powder.

EYES
Q: In what order should I apply my eye shadow, eyeliner, and mascara?
A: Apply eye shadow first, then liner and finally mascara. Shadow goes on first so that it doesn’t cover the eyeliner, which requires the least amount of blending. Mascara goes on last to prevent smudging.

Q: How can I make my small eyes appear larger?
A: Avoid lining your eyes. Lining does define the eyes, but it also tends to close them. The solution to this problem is to create the illusion that the entire eye area is larger by gently shading the entire eyelid. Shaping the arch of the eyebrows and applying a highlighter under the brow can also open up eyes.

Q: My eyes are very close together. How can I make them look farther apart?
A: Apply a light-colored eye shadow or concealer to the inner corner of the eye and blend well. Accentuate the outer corners of the eye using liner, shadow, and mascara.

Q: My eyes are too wide apart. How can make them appear more close together?
A: The solution is to shade the inside corner of the eye and along the inside bridge of the nose with a neutral-tone eye shadow, blending well with a professional eye shadow brush or sponge.

Q: I have deep set eyes. How can I bring them out?
A: Avoid using dark eye shadows and do not use shadow in the crease of your eyelid. To bring your eyes out, try using a light-color eye shadow on your eyelid.

Q: My eyes protrude. How can I make them appear to recede?
A: To set your eyes back, use a dark shadow on your eyelid. If your eyes are large and round, apply an eyeliner first.

Q: I have blue eyes and fair skin. What eye shadow shades are best for me?
A: Use shades of pink, beige, and brown on your lid and in the crease, for the most natural look. For a more dramatic look, try gray tones. For a more colorful look, try subtle shades of slate, mauve, and violet.

Q: I have deep, dark brown eyes and chestnut brown hair. What are my best eye shadow shades?
A: For deep brown eyes and chestnut brown hair, try a warm, light, neutral beige tone on the lid and a darker brown for the crease of your eye. For more drama, use shades of charcoal and black.

Q: I have hazel eyes and auburn hair. What are the most flattering eye shadow colors for me?
A: For a natural look, try warm browns, banana, or apricot. For more drama, try greens, khaki, red/brown, or gold.

Q:I want my eyeshadow to look like it was applied professionally. How can I achieve this result?
A: Rule # 1 about eyeshadow: When you look at a woman's face, you see her eyes not her eye shadow. The general rule is that light shades bring out your eyes; darker shades give them dimension. If you have small eyes and want to give the impression of larger eyes, you wantto stay with lighter shades. If you have large eyes or protruding eyes, you would want to use darker shades. To prevent shadow from creasing, put foundation on your lids first, then powder. This gives you a clean canvas for your colorations. The first step for applying eyeshadow is to apply a light color over your entire eyelid from lash line to brow. Use a large flat eyeshadow brush. Always use good quality brushes. The second step is to apply a medium shadow color on your lower lid from lash line to the crease of your eye. Use a fluff brush. The third step is to use your darkest color as a liner and apply along your lash line. To insure shadow will not flake, dampen your eyeliner brush before applying shadow. This will make it last longer. Once your foundation is on, gradually apply lighter shades first, slowly working up to your final color. An important fact to remember is to use colors that blend together naturally. It's not where you place the colors; it's that they work together and blend together invisibly. TIP: You do not want this to look like three separate colors.

Q: How do I keep my eyelashes from clumping
A: Choose a mascara formula with a lash separating brush. When lashes are wet, comb them out from root to tip with a plastic or metal lash comb.

Q: I wear glasses. How can I play them down?
A: To begin with, choose glasses that compliment your face shape and coloring. Frames that can be seen from 10 feet away are probably too noticeable. Unless you are Sally Jesse Raphael, pick a neutral frame and a hair flattering shade. Tinted lenses also detract from your natural shadings. Makeup-wise, emphasize lashes not by just making them darker, but longer as well. A shocking shade is not necessary for lips. A well-defined, confident mouth always says a lot.

Q: How do I make my blue eye shadow look elegant and fashionable?
A: Anyone over 25 will look better keeping the blue above the eye and not applying pencil in the eye. Keep the blush very pale or non existent and make it extremely elegant and fashionable. Wear it together with a dark brown or ruby lipstick.

EYEBROWS

Instructional Video

Q: How can I enhance my eyebrows to improve the way my face looks?
A: The eyebrows are the most important feature in defining the face. The trick to applying a natural eyebrow shape is using a hard, stiff, short brush, and working with colorations instead of pencils. Pencils can be used, but it takes practice and patience to get a natural look. The first step is plucking. For beautifully shaped eyebrows, follow the Tweezerman instructional video to your left or the steps below. Start by thinning the eyebrow, then slowly begin to define the arch. The arch should reach the highest point above the middle of your iris. Thin from that point out. The brows are the frame of your eyes. Don't be afraid to pluck your eyebrows - BUT NEVER SHAVE YOUR EYEBROWS. Spend your money on a good tweezer. The general rule of determining the shape of your eyebrow is to hold a pencil vertically alongside your face to the point where the pencil meets your eyebrow. That is the natural starting point. Tweeze the stray hairs between the two starting points. The end point is found by angling the pencil past the outer corner of your eye. Remove stray hairs beyond that spot and from below your natural arch. The shape and grooming of your eyebrows will make your eyes look bigger and open up your face more naturally then wearing a lot of makeup. Be careful, as heavy brows will overpower your face. Shape your eyebrows by plucking the hairs from underneath, not from above. TIP: Tweeze after a shower and it will be less painful. Most people have a good, natural shape; it just needs to be defined better. TIP: Take the color that is the closest to your eyebrow color and fill in the gaps to make a nicely groomed brow. If in doubt, always go a little lighter than your brow.

Q: How important is plucking my eyebrows?
A: Plucking eyebrows can be one of the simplest ways to streamline your look, neaten up your face, and enhance your eyes. Keep the middle of your eyebrows spaced according to the width of your face (your eyebrow should begin near the inside corner of your eye). Neaten up under the brow, trying not to pluck on top. This could destroy the natural arch. Create a soft arch above the center of your eye, gently tapering brow at the end. Go to a professional if you are wary about plucking your brows. She could show you a style that you can maintain yourself.

LIPS

Q: How can I define the shape of my lips?
A: Define the outline of your lips with a professional lip brush or lip liner pencil that closely matches the color of your lipstick. Then apply your lipstick and blend the liner with a lip brush.

Q: My lips are thin. How can I make them appear fuller?
A: Use a pencil or lip liner to define the outermost part of your lip line. Apply your lipstick with a professional lip brush, blending the lip liner, and add a slightly lighter color in the center to create contour. Avoid dark-colored lipsticks.

Q: My lips are very full. How can I make them appear thinner?
A: If you want to minimize full lips, use a lip liner pencil to define the inside of your natural lip line. Fill in with lipstick and try a slightly deeper colored lipstick.

Q: How do I keep my lipstick from bleeding?
A: Matte formulas do not bleed as much as creamier lipsticks and glosses. If you want that moist mouth look, make sure to powder the lip line after you've applied the color. Then re-apply lipstick. Lip liner isn't always necessary but can be used.

Q: How do I make my lipstick smudge proof?
A: Powder is the key to making less pigmented lip colors last longer on lips. Apply lip color with a matching lip liner if desired, then powder lips lightly. Re-apply lip color and pat again. An alternative is a lipstick sealer which puts a varnish or sealer coat on top of the lip color.

CHEEKS
Q: Where on my cheeks should I apply blush?
A: Blush should be applied on the cheekbone where the sun would give your cheeks a rosy glow.

Q: How do I apply blush properly for the best and most professional results?
A: First, start with a good quality blush brush. For a natural look, smile and you will see the fleshy part of your cheek that stands out the most; this is the apple of your cheeks. This is your starting point for applying your blush. Apply a light layer of blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend up and back toward your hairline. TIP: Tap off the excess blush from your brush before applying to your face. Do not blow on the bristles or you will put bacteria from your mouth onto the brush. Compact size blush brushes are too small and the bristles are not shaped properly. Once again, use a good quality brush. TIP: To find the perfect color blush for your skin, look at your cheeks after you have exercised. That is what your natural blush color should look like.

Q: I use a brownish shade of blush and like the neutral look, but sometimes feel I look a little dull.
A: Add a touch of a very light pure pink color to the cheekbones over the other blush.

MISCELLANEOUS Q: What is the relationship between hair color and makeup?
A: Any color that surrounds your face influences your makeup. Redheads, for instance, play up their fiery hair with warm blushes and cherry-stained lips. Blondes often prefer softer shades that reflect off their fair hair. Brunettes and dark-haired women are known for their deep and mysterious eyes that add to the mystery of their raven looks. Makeup is meant to emphasize the entire woman, and what woman is complete without her prize head of hair.
