This month IT’S ALL ABOUT LIPS. Lips are a focal point when we are speaking as they convey our feelings.

Changing the shape and color of our lips changes the expression of our face –

LIP ATTITUDE

Achieve the attitude you desire. Attitude is, after all, what lips are all about. They can be pale, innocent, pouty, or seductive. Lip color and contouring is the quickest way to add a little excitement and set the mood for your overall look

CONTOURing your lips

For Thin Lips: Choose bright or strong colors or apply clear lip gloss over your lipstick. Avoid dark, dull, or matte colors. Use concealer to cover your natural lip line, powder lightly; then using a lip liner, line your lips just a fraction outside your natural lip line. Thicken the new line until it covers the space between the line and natural lip line. Now fill in with lipstick.

For Medium Lips: Define the cupids bow or V-shape at the center of the upper lip along the natural lip line. Define the center bottom lip. Then draw a line, still along your natural line, from the outer corners in, to meet the center lines. Soften these lines with a lip liner brush. Apply lipstick from the center out, then to bottom lip sweeping color from corner to corner.

For Full Lips: Matte or muted lip colors will make the lips appear less full and smaller. Avoid bright, glossy, or light colors. Apply a thin coat of foundation along your natural lip line, then dust on a little face powder or yellow tinted concealing powder (evens out skin tones) around your lip area. Draw a fairly thick lip line just inside the natural lip line. Soften the line with a lip brush, then apply lip color.

APPLying lipstick

Lip Liners: Use them to prevent the color from spreading into surrounding skin or from seeping into wrinkles and fine lines around the lips. Lips have very few oil glands, and are therefore prone to early wrinkling. Also as we age, lips become pale; lip liners define the shape.

Lip Brushes: Use a finer lip brush to soften the lines of your lip liner for a more natural look. Then use a slightly thicker lip brush for the precise and smooth application of lipstick and lip gloss.

SHAPing your lips

A full rounded mouth shape is younger looking. Flat thin lips are harsh and strict. To find the ideal width for your lips, stare straight ahead into a mirror. Draw an imaginary line from the inner curve of the iris, down the cheeks to the lips. Anything that extends beyond this point should simply not be colored.

PROTECTing your lips

Since the skin on your lips is thinner and lower in melanin than the skin on the rest of the face, protect it from sun, wind, and cold. Use moisturizing lip balms with sunscreen. Dry wrinkly lips look better with color-rich moisturizing lipsticks and glosses to diffuse the light and soften creases.

LONG LASTING LIP COLOR

Both Foundation and concealer are good adhesives for lip color. Cover your lips lightly with it. Powder over it. You have now formed an extra barrier for color to adhere to without “bleeding”.

UNIQUE COLORS

Mix ‘n’ Match your colors to create new shades. Use blackish shades underneath to bring a mysterious depth to your lipstick. Glide the glittery or iridescent shades on top of your lipstick for sparkling glamour and fun party looks; or use them alone for a translucent shimmer.

CUSTOM COLORS

Can’t find the right shade of lipstick? Don’t fret – experiment mixing and matching shades and textures.
