What are custom blend cosmetics? Custom blend cosmetics are products that are created and customized for you. Shades and textures are tailored to fit your skin tones, skin conditions and your lifestyle. Most cosmetics companies are limited to a finite number of shades and formulations they offer each season. Custom blending offers nearly infinite possibilities. How do custom blend cosmetics work? Let’s look at lipstick. Liquid pigments and frosts are measured and combined with lipstick base to create the lipstick product. The pigments and frosts are what create the lipstick shade. They are mixed, much like an artist mixes paint, to achieve the desired shade. And they are measured. Adding more pigment and/or frost gives you a lipstick with more opacity, using less pigment gives you a sheerer lipstick. Once the lipstick pigments and frosts are combined with the base, this mixture is melted and poured into a lipstick mold to harden. An empty lipstick tube is then placed over the resulting lipstick bullet and a custom lipstick is revealed! Knowing your coloring simplifies things immensely. You need to determine if your coloring is cool or warm. Take a look at your wrists. If your veins are more blue than green and your skin is more pink than yellow, you are cool; if your veins are more green than blue and your skin is more yellow than pink, you are warm. You might be very cool, very warm, completely neutral, or more likely, somewhere in between. If you’re still not sure about your coloring, think about the colors you like to wear, the colors of clothing people say you look great in, or take different colors of fabric and drape them over your shoulders and see how you look. Do the colors brighten your skin tone or do they wash you out? Keep in mind that there are warm and cool tones of all colors. Ask yourself if the green you look best in is a yellow green (warm) or a blue green (cool). How does this relate to custom cosmetics? Let’s consider lipsticks again. If you have determined that you are cool, you will probably want a cool to neutral lipstick (or you could use a warm lipstick to create a dramatic and contrasting effect). The next question to answer is: do you want a high contrast or a low contrast lipstick? Not everyone looks great in a fiery red (high contrast) lipstick, you might look better in a darker, lighter or more muted shade. For less concentrated color you can custom blend a sheer lipstick which provides you with some color while allowing your natural lip color to show through. Once you have discovered the shades that most flatter you, you can custom blend lipsticks in a range of those shades. Custom blend cosmetics are changing the face of the cosmetics industry.
