The skin is the largest living organ of the body. It has specific work to do and is made up of substances designed especially for those functions.

STRUCTURE

The skin is the largest organ. It is elastic, flexible tissue and consists of three specialized layers:

The DERMIS, or inner layer
The EPIDERMIS, or outer layer
The SUBCUTANEOUS, or fatty layer

THE DERMIS

Provides nourishment through a network of cells containing blood and lymph vessels.
Contains sensory nerves.
Contains sweat glands which help to regulate body temperature and eliminate impurities. They can be the site of pimples or blackheads unless bacteria which collect in there are removed.
Contains sebaceous glands which produce an oil substance called sebum which forms a coating on the skin’s surface.

THE EPIDERMIS

Accepts the most benefits from skincare products.
Skincare preparations affect only the epidermis.
Cells are constantly shed and replaced by new ones formed in the inner level. This occurs faster in younger skin.
The topmost layer of the epidermis, skin’s actual surface, is called the STRATUM CORNEUM.
The stratum corneum consists of cells bound together by lipids which are complex oils.

FUNCTIONS OF THE SKIN - PROTECTION

Against drying out of inner tissues.
From bacterial invasion.
From exposure to environmental impurities.
Against fungi and environmental parasites.
Preventing nutrients from leaving the body.
Repairing surface breaks quickly.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL

Sweat glands produce perspiration which can cool the body as it evaporates.
Vascular constriction, or “goose bumps” help conserve body heat.

ELIMINATION

Sweat glands also eliminate impurities through perspiration.

SENSORY PERCEPTION

Nerve cells of the skin detect heat, cold, pressure and touch, sending messages to the brain.
